Ecological Enhancement Plans.

Auckland’s biodiversity is suffering from ongoing decline and Council cannot ‘turn the tide’ on its own. In a region of 500,000 hectares, less than 30 percent of Auckland’s original native vegetation cover remains. Over 50% of the remaining native vegetation is on private land, along with some of Auckland’s most threatened ecosystems.

As a collection of entities, Council are piloting the creation of pest management and restoration plans on golf courses (identified as large green spaces), so that the courses can become part of the green corridors in their landscape and no longer be sources of pests (both plants and animals) to the neighbourhoods surrounding them.

To enhance biodiversity and establish pest control programmes in green spaces across the region, Council is seeking to set up a framework aimed at ecological restoration and monitoring on golf course spaces across the region, building on a community-focused approach. There are around 40 golf courses in the wider Auckland region that AC hopes to engage with. AC has funded a pilot programme aimed at promoting and assisting with ecological restoration and monitoring on golf courses, building on a community-focused approach.
